For the purpose of this DJ-League World Region page, the geographical framework follows the United Nations M49 classification for Eastern Africa. Academic research has examined the city’s HipHop culture in detail, while contemporary groups such as Wakadinali are strongly associated with Nairobi’s Eastlands area. Their work uses Sheng and Swahili and reflects experiences from Nairobi’s urban neighbourhoods.
Kigali also has verifiable HipHop representation. Research published by Cambridge University Press examines the popularity of Kinyarwanda-language rap and HipHop in urban Rwanda, including the genre’s use of local slang and its relationship with life in Kigali.
