New York hiphop pioneer Kool DJ Red Alert has announced that he will step away from radio after more than four decades on the air. His final broadcast is scheduled for November 30, 2026, with a four-hour farewell DJ set on New York‘s 107.5 WBLS.
The announcement, made on November 2, marks the end of a remarkable broadcasting career. But Red Alert is not retiring from DJing. He plans to continue performing at special events and community celebrations.
The DJ Who Helped Shape Hip-Hop Radio
Long before streaming platforms and algorithm-driven playlists became central to music discovery, radio DJs played a defining role in introducing new records, artists and sounds to listeners.
Kool DJ Red Alert was among the most influential figures in that tradition.
Raised in Harlem, he became closely associated with New York‘s early hiphop movement and established himself on commercial radio through KISS-FM in the 1980s. His broadcasting career later included HOT 97 and WBLS.
His selections helped introduce audiences to emerging hiphop artists and groups, including Boogie Down Productions, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.
Red Alert’s importance extended beyond playing records. His radio presence connected the developing hiphop scene with a wider audience at a time when commercial broadcasting offered comparatively limited space for the culture.
A Celebration Before the Final Broadcast
The farewell comes during a milestone year for Red Alert, who celebrates 50 years of DJing in 2026 and turns 70 on November 27.
On November 24, Sony Hall in New York City will host The Red Alert Experience Gala, celebrating his career and contribution to hiphop culture.
The event brings together names associated with DJing, production and urban music, including Teddy Riley, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri and DJ Spinna.
Six days later, Red Alert is scheduled to deliver his final four-hour radio broadcast on WBLS.
Why His Radio Legacy Matters
Red Alert’s departure highlights a chapter of hiphop history in which the DJ was more than a presenter or performer.
Radio DJs helped shape musical discovery, connected local scenes with wider audiences and created spaces where emerging artists could be heard alongside established names.
The relationship between DJ culture and broadcasting remains important today. Mixshows, specialist programming and independent radio stations continue to provide a platform for musical selection, creative identity and community connections.
Red Alert’s career demonstrates how closely those traditions are connected. His influence belongs not only to the history of New York hiphop but also to the broader development of DJ-led music programming.
His final WBLS broadcast will close a historic radio chapter. His continued involvement in live DJing, however, means the story does not end behind the turntables.
