The Location

Florida is located in the southeastern United States and is one of the country’s most culturally diverse states. Major metropolitan areas such as Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando and Tallahassee have developed distinctive music communities shaped by people from across the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. This cultural diversity has helped create an environment where HipHop, R&B, Oldschool and Dancehall communities continue to thrive.

Florida has played a significant role in the development of modern HipHop and R&B. Miami became internationally recognized through the influence of the Miami Bass movement during the 1980s and 1990s, while later generations of artists expanded Florida’s impact across mainstream HipHop. The state is closely associated with internationally successful artists including Rick Ross, Flo Rida, Kodak Black, Plies, Ace Hood, Pitbull, Trina, Trick Daddy, JT (City Girls), Yung Miami, Denzel Curry, Ski Mask the Slump God, XXXTentacion, Lil Pump, T-Pain, Jason Derulo, Ariana Grande, Brian McKnight, Jake Miller, and DJ Khaled, who has long been based in Miami and remains one of HipHop’s most influential DJs, producers and executives.

Florida is also home to influential music companies and recording facilities that have contributed to HipHop and R&B worldwide. Miami-based Slip-N-Slide Records, founded by Ted Lucas, helped launch artists such as Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross and Plies. International labels including Universal Music Latin Entertainment, Sony Music Latin, Warner Music Latina and numerous independent studios maintain a strong presence in South Florida. Producers and creatives including Cool & Dre, The Runners, DJ Nasty, L.V.M., Scott Storch (long associated with Miami), and many independent production teams have contributed to countless internationally successful HipHop and R&B releases.
