Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur died following a shooting in Las Vegas, the case has entered a new legal phase.

A Nevada jury convicted Duane “Keffe D” Davis of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon on August 31. As a result, the verdict marked the first conviction connected to Shakur’s 1996 killing.

Davis did not face accusations of firing the fatal shots. Instead, prosecutors argued that he helped organize the retaliatory attack. They said he supplied the gun and helped the group locate Shakur after a confrontation at the MGM Grand. That confrontation involved Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson.

Under Nevada law, a person can face a murder conviction for knowingly helping another person commit the crime. Therefore, prosecutors did not have to prove that Davis pulled the trigger.

The jury reached its verdict after less than three hours of deliberation. Prosecutors relied heavily on Davis’ own public statements over the years.

Those statements included recorded interviews and material connected to his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. However, the defense challenged those accounts. It argued that Davis had exaggerated parts of his story. The defense also said independent evidence did not support enough of his claims.

Still, the jury accepted the prosecution’s case and returned a guilty verdict.

Davis is now publicly challenging the result. In his first interview after the conviction, he maintained his innocence. He also said he expects to overturn the verdict on appeal.

In addition, Davis disputed the way prosecutors presented his earlier statements. He criticized the handling of the trial as well. Those claims remain his position, while the conviction itself still stands.

The legal process is not over. The court will sentence Davis on October 13. He faces the possibility of life imprisonment.

An appeal would focus on alleged legal or procedural errors. It would not simply restart the trial from the beginning.

For HipHop, the verdict carries meaning beyond another courtroom headline. Shakur’s death became one of the defining unresolved stories of the 1990s.

For decades, the case fueled speculation around one of the culture’s darkest periods. Now, the conviction places part of that history on a formal legal record for the first time.

However, major questions remain. Prosecutors have not identified the person who actually fired the fatal shots. In addition, an appeal could keep the case active for years.

For now, October 13 is the next major date. The trial produced a guilty verdict, but Davis continues to contest the outcome.
