The Location

Lyon is France’s third-largest city and the administrative centre of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Located at the meeting point of the Rhône and Saône rivers, the city has long been an important crossroads for commerce, education, culture and international exchange. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre, major universities and strong creative industries attract people from across France and around the world.

Beyond its historical reputation, Lyon has developed into one of France’s most active urban cultural centres. The city’s diverse neighbourhoods and multicultural population have contributed to a creative environment where music, street art, dance and independent cultural initiatives continue to grow. Young artists, DJs, dancers and event organisers regularly shape the local nightlife and community spaces.

Lyon also has a well-established place within French HipHop culture. The city has produced nationally recognised artists such as L’Algérino (who began his career in the Lyon area before moving to Marseille) and especially Kacem Wapalek, while many independent rappers, DJs and producers continue to represent the city today. HipHop concerts regularly take place at venues including Le Transbordeur, La Rayonne, Le Sucre (for selected urban events) and Halle Tony Garnier, where internationally known HipHop and R&B artists frequently perform during French tours. Every year, Woodstower Festival also includes HipHop performances alongside its wider cultural programme, giving local and international artists a visible platform.
