Jhené Aiko is officially returning with a new studio album.

The R&B singer has announced Westside Whimsy, set for release on September 11. It will be her first full-length studio project since Chilombo arrived in 2020.

For R&B listeners and DJs, the timing is especially interesting because Aiko has already pointed toward some of the influences behind the project: 1990s music, California culture and the laid-back atmosphere of the West Coast.

Chilombo became one of the most important albums of Aiko’s career.

The project reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and received multiple GRAMMY nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album.

Since then, Aiko has remained active through individual releases and collaborations, but Westside Whimsy marks her return to the full album format after more than six years.

That gap makes the release more significant than a routine album announcement.

Aiko has previously described 1990s music as an important influence on the new project.

She has also connected its direction to California — including West Coast car culture, beaches, road trips and the relaxed atmosphere associated with the region.

That combination gives the project an interesting position within contemporary R&B.

Rather than simply following current trends, the early description suggests a record drawing from musical memory, regional identity and Aiko’s established atmospheric style.

For DJs, a new Jhené Aiko album matters because her catalog has long existed between contemporary R&B and HipHop-adjacent programming.

Her music regularly appears in R&B sets, slower club transitions, radio programming and late-night selections where vocals and atmosphere matter as much as immediate energy.

No official tracklist has been revealed yet, so it is too early to judge which songs from Westside Whimsy will become DJ records.

But the combination of Aiko’s established R&B audience, a six-year album gap and explicit 90s and West Coast influences makes this one of the more relevant R&B releases to watch this week.

Westside Whimsy arrives September 11.
