The Soul Train Awards 2026 will return on November 27 and reconnect the franchise with the city where its story began. BET will tape the show in Chicago, where Don Cornelius first created Soul Train in 1970. For the first time, the ceremony will also be simulcast on CBS. Meanwhile, Spotify joins in an exclusive music streaming role. Together, those moves connect Soul Train’s history with a much broader modern audience.
Soul Train Awards 2026 Reconnect With Chicago
Chicago is more than a backdrop for this edition. It is where Soul Train began before the program moved into national syndication in 1971.
That history matters. Soul Train became a major showcase for R&B, soul and Black music culture. It also welcomed hip-hop, funk, jazz, disco and gospel. In addition, music, dance, fashion and personality helped turn the show into a cultural institution.
Bringing the awards back to Chicago therefore gives the 2026 return a clear sense of place. Instead of treating the franchise only as nostalgia, the production reconnects it with the city where the original idea took shape.
Why CBS and Spotify Matter
The distribution strategy also makes this comeback more significant than a standard awards-show return.
BET remains the main television home. However, CBS will carry the Soul Train Awards for the first time. BET HER, VH1, MTV2 and LOGO are also scheduled to air the ceremony. As a result, the franchise can reach viewers beyond its traditional core.
Spotify adds another layer. The platform can connect the awards with listeners who now discover R&B and soul mainly through digital services. That role fits naturally with Soul Train’s long history of introducing audiences to music and artists.
For the DJ-League, this is the most interesting part of the story. Soul Train was built around discovery long before streaming existed. Now, the same idea can move across television, streaming and social platforms.
A Legacy Built Around Discovery
BET has not yet announced the host, performers or honorees. Those details will follow later.
Still, the framework is already clear. The Soul Train Awards 2026 will connect established names with a new generation of Black music audiences. At the same time, Chicago gives that strategy a direct link to the franchise’s roots.
Therefore, this return is more than a heritage moment. It also tests whether a famous R&B and soul brand can translate its original role into today’s fragmented media world. The tools have changed, but the basic idea remains familiar: help audiences find music, style and new voices.
For R&B fans, that is a comeback worth watching.
