If you only follow Urban Music through social media, streaming charts, or the latest viral trends, it’s easy to get the impression that today’s DJ culture revolves around just a handful of subgenres.
Our latest survey within the international DJ-League community paints a very different picture.
Members from 39 countries across all continents were asked a simple question. Here are the results:
“What are your personal favorite genres?”
- HipHop: 27.43%
- R&B: 22.86%
- Oldschool: 22.29%
- Ragga/Dancehall: 14.29%
- Others: 12.57%
- Trap/Drill: 0.57%
Most importantly: 72.57% of all responses went to HipHop, R&B, and Oldschool.

The Reality of DJ Culture Goes Beyond Today’s Hype
The numbers confirm something that many experienced DJs have known for years:
Urban Music has never been defined by short-term trends alone.
HipHop, R&B, and Oldschool have been the backbone of clubs, radio shows, festivals, and events around the world for decades. These genres connect generations, create memories, and continue to deliver results where it matters most: with real people. That’s why these results aren’t surprising. If anything, they confirm a reality that often gets overlooked in today’s music landscape.
This Survey Reflects More Than Personal Taste
These results don’t just show what DJs enjoy listening to. They also reflect what their audiences respond to. Every DJ interacts with real people on a regular basis.
In clubs.
On the radio.
At live events.
Through livestreams.
At festivals.
DJs see firsthand which songs create energy, which genres connect people, and which styles stand the test of time. That’s what makes these numbers so valuable. They represent far more than 39 countries, on all continents. They reflect the experiences DJs gather every week from thousands of listeners, guests, fans, and music lovers around the world. When nearly three-quarters of all responses go to HipHop, R&B, and Oldschool, it says more than just what DJs personally enjoy. It provides insight into the music that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
Why DJ-League Has Always Taken a Different Approach
These findings reinforce the direction DJ-League has followed from day one. While many platforms focus on specific trends or temporary market movements, DJ-League embraces the full spectrum of Urban Culture:
- HipHop
- R&B
- Oldschool
- Dancehall
- Radio Culture
- DJ Culture
- Artist Culture
Not for a trend.
Not for an algorithm.
But for the people who genuinely live and support the culture.
The survey results validate that approach. They show that the international Urban Music community remains far broader and more diverse than many industry narratives suggest.
Real Relevance Beats Chasing Trends
One of the reasons DJ-League continues to focus on these core genres is simple:
We believe artists deserve to reach DJs who genuinely want their music. Likewise, DJs deserve music that aligns with their interests, audiences, and programming needs. That’s why our approach to promotion has always been built around relevance.
Sending music to the wrong audience doesn’t help artists. It doesn’t help DJs. And it certainly doesn’t create meaningful results.
Our goal has never been to push as many songs as possible. Our goal is to connect the right music with the right people. Quality over volume. Relevance over reach. Real engagement over temporary attention.
The Numbers Validate Our Vision
This survey highlights something important:
The international Urban Music community is far more diverse than many people assume. Anyone looking to reach DJs effectively needs to understand what they actually play, what their audiences enjoy, and which genres continue to have long-term impact.
That understanding has been at the core of DJ-League from the beginning. And it’s one of the reasons why our international community continues to grow. Not because we chase every trend. But because we stay connected to the culture that continues to move people worldwide.

Final Thoughts
The results of our international survey are clear:
72.57% of all responses belong to HipHop, R&B, and Oldschool.
Not algorithms.

And that’s exactly where DJ-League has always focused its attention:
On the music.
On the culture.
And on the people who continue to keep it alive worldwide.
